CEO
Vancouver Economic Commission (VEC)
The City of Vancouver provides municipal government services to businesses and residents in one of Canada’s most beautiful and liveable cities. Recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, one of British Columbia’s Top Employers, as well as one of one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers, it serves a population of 693,500, has an annual operating budget in excess of $1 billion, and a staff count of over 10,000.
The Vancouver Economic Commission (VEC), an agency of the City of Vancouver, works to strengthen the City's economic future by helping existing businesses, attracting investment, and making policy recommendations. The Vancouver Economic Action Strategy has three major areas of focus:
· Creating a healthy climate for growth and prosperity;
· Providing support for local business, new investment and global trade;
· Focusing on people, by attracting and retaining human capital.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, and working closely with the Mayor and the City Manager, the CEO of the VEC leads all economic and business development and is accountable for all aspects of VEC’s activities. The CEO will position the City of Vancouver as being ‘open for business,’ particularly for emerging economies and sectors. Working closely with the Mayor and other VEC Directors to ensure VEC achieves its strategic and operating objectives, the CEO will build positive working relationships internally with the Board and City Hall, and externally with other businesses and government organizations.
The ideal candidate is a strategic, credible and entrepreneurial business leader who brings public and private sector experience working as a senior organizational executive either as a President/CEO/GM or in a business development, economic development or related role. Experience that includes leading a company, forging relationships with government and/or working with emerging technologies (clean tech, creative economy, etc.) and international experience is preferred. A natural ‘connector’, the preferred candidate has the business acumen and credibility to represent the City and work closely with a wide range of key stakeholders.
